# Voice and learning out loud: research in plain words

Reading aloud, explaining out loud and talking things through: what the evidence does and does not show.

## Summaries (1)

### [Reading aloud helps you remember a text, but not understand it better](/papers/roberts-2023-reading-aloud-memory-not-comprehension/)

Brady R. T. Roberts et al. (2023) · Four lab experiments · Peer-reviewed

Across four experiments, people answered memory questions about passages better when they had read them aloud than when they read them silently. Reading aloud did not help with comprehension questions. The authors think reading aloud makes information distinctive, so it helps most when the test asks for exactly what was read.

Each summary says what the researchers did, who took part, what they found, the limitations, and whether we read the full paper or only the abstract.
